Welcome
Hello, Iām Sabrina Kimball, co-founder of Universal Changing Places. My son, Greyson, and I founded this movement in 2015. Our mission is to make public restrooms more accessible for people with disabilities and those who require assistance with personal care, advocating for facilities that go beyond ADA standards to support dignity, safety, and independence for all.
Universal Changing Places began as a grassroots movement inspired by Changing Places, which began in the United Kingdom in 2006 to address the needs of people who require additional space, equipment, and assistance in public restrooms. Since then, the Changing Places movement has expanded internationally, helping bring greater awareness to the need for truly accessible restroom facilities around the world.
Our Story
In 2015, I was an intern in Partners in Policymaking (PIP), a leadership and advocacy program for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. PIP taught me how to turn ideas into action, which led Greyson and me to start Universal Changing Places.
This cause is deeply personal. Greyson and I faced the daily challenge of inaccessible public restrooms. Many families in our situation are forced to change loved ones on public restroom floors or leave events and activities early because an appropriate accessible restroom simply isn't available. I spent countless hours in local malls checking fitting rooms, hoping to find a safe, private place with a large enough bench where I could care for Greyson.
When we began, concerns about liability made it difficult to gain support in the United States for the traditional Changing Places model. Rather than stop there, Greyson and I focused on a practical way forward: advocating for powered height-adjustable adult changing tables in family restrooms. These became the foundation of the Universal Changing Places model and a way to move restroom accessibility beyond ADA standards.
Our Early Beginnings
In the first years of Universal Changing Places, we made meaningful strides by placing powered height-adjustable adult changing tables in key locations, helping to demonstrate the need and feasibility of accessible family restrooms:
-
-
- Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) - First state in the U.S. to add them to their rest areas
- Donald L. Tucker Civic Center, Tallahassee, FL
- Florida State University - Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee, FL
- Orlando International Airport - First international airport in the U.S. to add them across their concourses
-
These early placements were crucial in showing businesses and agencies how Universal Changing Places could enhance accessibility and dignity for people with disabilities and their caregivers.
Honoring Greyson's Legacy
Greyson may no longer be with us, but his vision and courage live on through this movement. Universal Changing Places is a movement to advance dignity, safety, and inclusion for people with disabilities and those who assist with their personal care. Together, we can help create a future where everyone has access to a restroom that meets their needs and allows them to participate more fully in their communities.
